About us

who we are?

We are a group of enthusiasts – researchers, scientists, professional beekeepers, national park foresters – actively acting for the black bee Apis mellifera mellifera line M Kampinoska in Poland. We founded the Stowarzyszenie Kampinoska to save the Kampinoska bee from total extinction.

Apis Mellifera Mellifera from the Kampinos Forest

The Kampinoska bee is a globally unique Central European bee, Apis mellifera mellifera line M. Kampinoska. One of our five native honeybee populations originally occurring in Poland: four European dark bee species and one carniolan honey bee.

The Central European bee Apis mellifera mellifera was originally a natural component of the forest biocenosis. The disappearance of beekeeping and the extinction of wild forest bee populations in the twentieth century, led to an imbalance in the natural environment, as well as the slow depletion of biodiversity.

The influx of imported bees over the past 40 years has further led to the mixing of bee populations and the displacement of local bees, which produce less honey, but are characterized by outstanding qualities of cold hardiness, resistance to adverse environmental conditions and a very good use of a variety of benefits.

Situation of the Kampinos bee

The M Kampinoska bee line is one of the lines representing the genotype of Central European bees in a relatively pure form and has been protected since the 1970s. In the early 1980s, a conservation breeding area was administratively established for this line, thanks to which it has survived and can represent a valuable source of Central European bee genes. The natural habitat of these bees is the Kampinos Forest, which is why the conservation breeding area of line M Kampinoska is located here.

At present, however, the Kampinoska bee has been virtually completely supplanted by foreign breeds of honey bee, in the importation of which modern beekeepers are competing from various parts of Europe and even the world.

As of today, there are several dozen colonies of relatively pure breeds throughout Poland, which is the subject of morphometric and genetic studies. This means that the Kampinoska bee is on the brink of extinction as a subspecies. There is still a shadow of a chance to save it as a subspecies, so immediate action is needed.

Stowarzyszenie Kampinoska was established to integrate the scientific, beekeeping and social communities in order to work together to protect the Kampinoska bee.

our objectives

– to promote the conservation and breeding of the preserved ecotype of the Apis mellifera mellifera of the M Kampinos line.
– to inform, educate and influence general, public, national and international scientific, political and public organisations in seeking support for the objectives.
– to obtain advice from experts, scientific committees and institutions and to disseminate relevant technical and scientific information to groups, associations and institutions.
– to obtain political and financial support for projects initiated by the association in the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity
–to recolonise an area (reintroduction) that has lost its native bee, emphasising the preference for the introduction of a native honeybee population that is biologically closest to the original inhabitants of the areas concerned
